Waterloo Mid Century Modern Transformation

A house can be a home for a long time before the desire for a complete transformation becomes a reality. This was the case in this mid-1900s construction that was reconstructed into this mid-century modern beauty! The main floor is open and expansive, while still remaining welcoming and homey, while the finishes remain warm and comfortable. The entirely new second floor is bright and open while the master suite opens into the hidden oasis of a backyard, tucked away from the street and passerbys. Without a before photo, it’s nearly impossible to picture the transformation from quiet story and a half to stunning showpiece.

Kiwanis Park Interior

Details and trim work are the calling card of this Kiwanis Park renovation, which included a new main floor layout to the original custom-built home. Each finishing detail was carefully considered, mocked up on site, then installed and finished under the expert care of Sutcliffe Homes personnel working in conjunction with the design team at Elle3 Design & Interiors Inc. The client’s desire was that the existing window layout and some aspects of the original construction remained intact and were complimented by new features. For example, fresh limestone sills wrap the interior window, while the CNC cut millwork detail aligns flawlessly on either side of the custom fit glass pane. The same design carries into the living room as it adds more subtle detail to the TV wall.

Mid Century Modern Wet Room

The homeowners of this Hanlon Creek two storey gave up space in their master bedroom to expand the main bathroom for this result! The mid-century modern vanity, matte gold hardware and taps are a perfect complement to the open wet area. Features of the wet area include a flush entry shower and soaker tub where you can splash to your heart’s content. The shower controls are accessible without entering the wet area, eliminating goosebumps when the shower is first turned on!

Elora Century Update

This 19th century home lacked a dedicated laundry room – something important to the homeowners. The back hallway now hosts laundry cabinetry and machines, while the bright powder room makes excellent use of a smaller space. The highlight is the open kitchen with large island and coffee bar. Most important is what cannot be photographed – elimination of baseboard heaters and significant improvements to the kitchen insulation and HVAC system make this space a cozy, comfortable part of the home.

Sutcliffe Homes and Renovations respect the character of a century home and enjoy nothing more than applying modern construction features to the classic traditional homes of Guelph and Wellington county.  Check out this century home addition and this Elora Porch rebuild for further inspiration.

Hanlon Creek Kitchen

The removal of a load bearing wall and replacement with an engineered beam opened up this kitchen and family room. This created a larger shared space for dining, relaxing, and entertaining. The beverage cabinet was sized to exactly fit the new beam dimension – attention to detail where it counts.

Minimalist Space

Black and white minimalist lines dominate this Old University area renovation, but the natural tone hardwood flooring warms the space. This sleek and modern kitchen is deceptively simple. A myriad of details enhance the space. The barn door hides an office area, while drywall window returns highlight the window choices. The specialty glass window sits flush with the hardwood floor allowing for maximum light and the Caesarstone countertop meets the wide-open kitchen window. Looking for a change from traditional? Let’s talk.

North End Renovation

We raised the interior ceiling height in this north end bungalow and removed several walls to create an open concept living space.

Painted cabinets with shaker doors, modern farmhouse stained maple island with matching hood fan, high end granite countertops, herringbone backsplash, and shiplap accent wall with recycled barn beam mantel are some of the features in this transformative renovation.

Exhibition Park Renovation

The Exhibition Park area is one of Guelph’s classic neighbourhoods. Picture a large, amenity-filled city park surrounded by an eclectic mix of century homes only a short walk from downtown.
Like many renovation projects it started with the need for a practical revamping of an existing space. In this case reworking the staircase to allow for a cleaner landing and some additional storage. In keeping with the character of this charming home the renovation featured painted cabinets with a vintage back-splash and granite counter-top, custom wall paneling with transom windows and a custom pocket door leading to the hideaway pantry and stairway landing.

Parkwood Gardens Renovation

The project was a full main floor renovation to a 1980’s era home in the Parkwood Gardens area of Guelph. Some of the many features and details: new flooring throughout including the upper landing; a fireplace surround and cabinetry with pillars separating the principal rooms; a full kitchen renovation with all new stained maple cabinetry with shaker door style, quartz countertop and a feature wall. The existing circular stairs were re-finished with new railing and iron spindles. The stairs and railing were stained carefully to match the new hardwood flooring.
